Ethical commitments

All of DM Archipelago’s opals are sourced exclusively across Australia, from the mines of Coober Pedy, Lightning Ridge, and Quilpie and Winton in Queensland. The Australian opal industry is built and sustained on ethical practices, and we engage with every aspect of these practices. Australian Opal mining is conflict-free, and no harm is ever done at any stage of operation.

As a grassroots industry and one that never yields to corporate interests, only individuals—not corporations—are permitted to hold mining claims, which themselves, are limited in size and duration. Large-scale mining is thus not allowed, reducing the overall environmental impact.

When mining ends, every claim must be fully rehabilitated. This includes filling in all holes, removing any remaining machinery or materials, and restoring the site to its original state to ensure minimal disruption to native flora and fauna by re-landscaping and re-seeding disrupted vegetation. A security deposit is collected at the start of each claim, which is only refunded once rehabilitation is complete.
